Satellites are essential for the functioning of modern society. Any failure would have major consequences for global trade and, for example, supermarket supplies. In recent years, the number of satellites in space has been rapidly increasing, leading to increased space debris and the risk of collisions. Moreover, the commercialisation of space raises questions about society's dependence on this vital digital infrastructure. In the Rathenau Scan Satellites, we investigate the social issues arising from the rapidly changing satellite landscape. How do we ensure long-term access, safety, and peace in space?
