Generative AI Technology Assessment - Commercial Development
Background: The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) has created growing excitement and much debate about its potential to revolutionize entire industries, particularly with recent developments in generative AI, which can create text, images, audio, video, and other content when prompted by a user. Use of generative AI has exploded to over 100 million users globally due to recently enhanced capabilities and user interest. This technology may dramatically increase productivity and transform daily tasks across much of society. However, it may also spread disinformation and present risks to national security and other domains, and public use may create unintended societal and environmental effects. At Congress' request, GAO will continue work on generative AI by conducting a series of technology assessments and a federal audit on the use of generative AI technologies. This engagement will describe the status of the technology in the commercial sector. Key Questions: 1) What technologies enable the development of generative AI tools? 2) What best practices, constraints, and other factors do commercial entities consider in developing and deploying generative AI tools? 3) What processes do commercial entities follow regarding the collection, use, and storage of data used to train generative AI technologies?
