The greenhouse effect is a phenomenon of warming of the lower layers of the Earth's atmosphere, induced by gases that render these layers to be opaque to the thermal radiation emitted by the Earth. Carbon dioxide and methane are the main greenhouse gases. Methane's absorption of thermal radiation emitted by the Earth is more than 28 times greater than that of carbon dioxide.
