In the spring of 2021, the Committee for the Future commissioned a report on value added in foreign trade from Statistics Finland. The goal was to pilot a new statistical method and at the same time produce a value-added-based foreign trade statistics user's manual, with the help of which the new statistics can be put into wider use. The Trade in Value Added (TiVa) statistic has been developed to describe the impact of globalization on society. In the case where statistics were previously given on how much, what and what value of products are exported from Finland and brought here, the new statistics allow us to examine in more detail the importance of foreign trade for Finland, when trade takes place in long value chains that extend to several countries.
