Adapting to climate change in developing countries
Climate change presents a significant threat to humans. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) 150,000 deaths globally were caused by climate change in 2000. Poverty greatly reduces adaptation capacity required to minimise the negative impacts of environmental change. The impacts of climate change will exacerbate inequalities in food security, water stresses, health status and economic growth. This will hinder poverty reduction strategies and may prevent the attainment of the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). This briefing will look at the ways in which a changing climate affects the inhabitants of developing countries and will examine limitations in their capacity to adapt to climate change. It will consider methods which may enhance their adaptive capacity and address the commitment of the UK government in assisting developing countries reduce their vulnerability to the adverse effects of climate change through effective and sustainable adaptation decisions.
