Solar Radiation Modification (SRM) aims to reduce the amount of solar radiation reaching the Earth’s surface in order to mitigate global warming. Technologies and strategies for limiting global warming are increasingly becoming the focus of attention in science, politics and society as a whole, even in Switzerland, as highly controversial issues. The issue is less about whether Switzerland should or should not conduct experiments or apply the technology. Rather, the aim is to examine the extent to which Swiss politics, society, research, etc. might be affected by or involved in such activities and developments.
An interdisciplinary TA study is intended to help better understand and discuss the challenges or new opportunities. By providing independent and balanced information on novel SRM technologies, the aim is to create a basis for informed decision-making for policymakers and the general public. Based on an overview of SRM technologies, the study will address political, economic, legal, social, environmental and ethical aspects, highlight the associated opportunities and risks, and ascertain public attitudes towards these technologies. Finally, by discussing scenarios, options for action can be formulated.
