Comparison of Biosafety and Biosecurity Standards for the U.S. and Other Countries
Background: Biosafety and biosecurity regulations, policies, guidelines, and standards help ensure that workers, the community, and the environment are protected from infectious agents, toxins, and biological hazards. Furthermore, how foreign countries oversee biosafety and biosecurity within their borders has the potential to affect the U.S. and the broader international community. The National Biodefense Strategy identifies international partners, including members of the Group of 20 (G20), as key stakeholders for establishing and maintaining global health security, so their standards and practices are of particular interest to U.S. policymakers. Key Questions: 1) What are the key components of U.S. biosafety and biosecurity as reflected in regulations, policies, guidelines, and standards? 2) How do biosafety and biosecurity components in selected G20 countries compare to the selected U.S. key components?
