The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) has created growing excitement and much debate about its potential to revolutionize entire industries, particularly with recent developments in generative AI, which can create text, images, audio, video, and other content when prompted by a user. Use of generative AI has exploded to over 100 million users globally due to recently enhanced capabilities and user interest. This technology may dramatically increase productivity and transform daily tasks across much of society. However, it may also spread disinformation and present risks to national security and other domains, and public use may create unintended societal and environmental effects. The engagement is one in a series of GAO products on generative AI. This engagement will elaborate more on generative AI in the commercial sector as GAO previously reported in June 2024 (GAO-24-106946). Key Questions: 1) What leading practices, constraints, and other factors do commercial entities consider in developing and deploying generative AI tools? 2) What processes do commercial entities follow regarding the collection, use, and storage of data used to train generative AI technologies?
