Green belts around cities
BAS (2025) INFOS 2(324), Green belts around cities
The establishment of green belts around cities serves as a response to the uncontrolled urban sprawl that generates environmental, social, and economic challenges. Green belts — open areas (such as forests, bodies of water, and agricultural lands) with minimal built-up development — perform essential ecological functions (e.g., protection of water resources, improvement of air quality), as well as recreational and economic functions (e.g., food production). Although such solutions are implemented in many countries worldwide, their adoption in Poland faces significant obstacles, primarily due to insufficient legal frameworks.
