Although offshore wind energy currently accounts for slightly more than 1% of renewable energy generation capacity, its dynamic development in recent years has made it a potential future pillar of energy supply in the world. United Kingdom, Germany and Denmark are currently leaders in the sector of offshore wind energy in terms of technology and regulatory solutions. Poland is also drawing from their experiences while entering into the offshore sector. This article presents the current status and development prospects for offshore wind energy, with particular emphasis on the situation in the european countries that are offshore leaders, as well as in Poland.
